victorian science (2009 - present)
My work addresses scientific experiment as an attempt to order the chaotic, to record the fleeting, and to contain and control natural forces. Geometry has returned in my work in a new form: air forced into parallel lines, moths displayed in a grid, pattern created by metronomic time-lapse photography, all in pursuit of making intelligible the otherwise disordered or momentary.
The smoke machine drawings reveal a different approach to abstraction, not through complete invention but instead through the displacement and unnatural containment of physical forces.
